Older U.S. toilets are like this. They used 5-7 gallons per flush. A high water level keeps the bowl cleaner - you leave fewer skid marks - plus if your crap is covered by water, it lets off less stink. The stink is generated during the time the crap exits your butt until it hits the water and sinks. Of course this feature does not apply to floaters. Some people don't like to make tinkle noises when they urinate so boys and men sometimes try to hit the area just above the water line but below the rim. This makes more of a mess than just letting it hit the center of the water. Women and girls can lean back with their legs apart so at a certain point their stream hits the front of the bowl just above the water line. Again, it can make more of a mess than if the girl sits with her knees together with a slight forward lean. Personally I always hit the center and don't care if anybody hears me and I like to hear the different tinkle noises that people make. Men are louder than women when tinkling. Newer toilets are under the government requirement of using only 1.5 gallons per flush so for one thing there is less water in the bowl and less water to flush away stuff. With a heavy load and if you use big wads of tissue, it may take 2-3 flushes or it may clog. The designers are getting better making them, there are even some toilets that have a 1 gallon flush for #1. European toilets were always designed with water conservation in mind but it is only the last few years that all American toilets have to flush with 1.5 gallons or less. It is a great idea to save water. In my house we often don't flush for #1,several people pee, then we flush. As long as you don't leave it too long that it starts stinking, and remember to flush if company is coming over. It's not a good idea to flush tampons and that sort of junk, flush only stuff that has been eaten, and toilet paper.

Pour yourself a bucket of hot tap water and poor it down the toilet. A gallon or two should do the trick with a minor clog. The key here is to poor quickly, but not so quickly you splash yourself and the floor. If you find you aren't getting anywhere, then it's time to move on. For around $25 at the hardware store you can purchase what is called a manual toilet snake. You only have to buy it once and you avoid load of chemicals. This handy little device can be threaded through the toilet and then wound around until the blockage is released. This can get a little messy but it sure beats using your hands. This is especially useful when the blockage goes deeper into the pipe than the toilet bowl itself. If this doesn't work, try again. Should work with a couple of times. Good Luck! ^_^

That's only the older toilets in the U.S. The newer ones don't. The newer one really suck because you have to flush them 2 - 3 times assuming they don't clog up. And that really sucks. Had the same problem when I was in Europe years ago. I was really glad to come back the the U.S. for that reason until some mindless dork got it in his head that Europe was doing it better and forced us the same way. I've really been considering looking into buying an older house that has the older toilets.

I don't know what toilets you have seen, but most toilets in America are half-filled. The European toilets are designed to use less water, but leave "tracks" that don't get washed down. Most American bathrooms do not have or need toilet brushes.

The bowl fills only to under half...a full toilet would overflow at every flush or splash like crazy. Oh those nutty Yanks.

We make bigger turds in the US than the the Europeans do in Europe, hence the need for extra water.

Here in the U.S. we are big on multi-tasking so we wash our hands at the same time we wipe.
