thinking of doing a short course run by the CAI on aerial & dish installations, then work for myself, is this a viable idea? can anyone advise me on the plus & negatives of this idea

Well, the satellite dish craze of the 70's and 80's is over (those were the days when you could put a monster dish in your back yard that blocked everyone's view of everything).

Today, you really need to hook into Dish Network or DirectTV and get work with them.

I'm certified for satellite installation, it's not hard, but you have to know where the satellites are at and what elevation you need to set your dish to to get the signal. Then you need to install a receiver, and the signals are usually patterned or encrypted. That means you have to sell the dish with a payed service (like a cable service), and you can't get that without having an installment agreement with the company offering the programming.

Before you start, see what your chances are for partnering with a programming service. It's possible that exclusive contracts have already slammed the market shut and you won't get anywhere.
