do not use it. It has toxic gasses in it which can cause SIDS. Please read http://www.thecauseofsids.org/Cause_of_SIDS_found_by_Jane_Sheppard.htm or visit http://www.thecauseofsids.org/

I would say not to use it.... but I don't know what shape it's in. I think the concern about reusing a crib mattress is the baby getting stuck in the groves the other baby made. I just had my 2nd child and when the public health nurse called my house she went thru a list of things on crib safety and not reuseing a mattress was one... also not to use bumper pads in the crib, she said it restricts air flow... maybe you could call your doc or some form of safety board to make sure its safe.

Crib mattresses are not erroneously expensive items. If I were you, I would just get a new one. Honestly, would you sleep on a mattress that's been in storage for 30 years? Yuck.
The mattress may have sentimental value, but remember - it's just a thing. Spend $40 bucks at Walmart & get a new one.
Good luck!

There is no way I'd sleep on a 30 year old mattress, and if I won't do it, there is absolutely no way I'd have my child sleep on one.
just curious, but how is a crib mattress and not the crib sentimental.

in case you take advantage of the precautions you listed then it really is going to be fantastic to reuse. My son's mattress has a small hollow in it and that i nonetheless use it. also, with the present epidemic of mattress insects plaguing many aspects of the international, i might want to patch the holes with duct tape or some thing. i comprehend that it sounds red-neck, in spite of the undeniable fact that it would want to avert any of the little bloodsuckers from happening your toddler's mattress and making a dinner party of your toddler!!!

Safety standards have changed so much over the years. I don't think it would be a good idea. Who knows what materials could be inside.

It is not safe. It is harboring all kinds of mold unless it was stored dry cleaned and vacuum packed. Keep it by all means, but don't use it.
