BMW only electronically limits the top speed of their cars in the US. The fastest *production* BMW is the M6, with a top speed over 200 mph. The fastest BMW would be one of their F1 race cars - you can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Sauber
The fastest would probably be the 1400 hp M12/13 or the P84/5 with a V10.

BMW's fastest-ever road car capable of hitting 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds and with a top speed of more than 200mph, is the new M6 is even quicker than the M5 supersaloon. Lighter, lower and leaner than its sibling, the V10-engined four-seat coupé is a showcase for BMW's M division and its engineering expertise. Visually, there are some obvious differences between this and the standard 6-Series. BMW has given it a unique set of alloys and individual detailing, plus a carbon fibre roof. This weighs 45kg less than a steel panel, and helps lower the car's centre of gravity by 60mm compared to a 6-Series.
By and large, the M6 succeeds. It feels lighter and more nimble with less weight transfer through corners, and better body control. It's a very exciting car to drive, but the engine dominates the experience. The mighty V10 delivers huge thrust through the mid-range, propelling the M6 along with Ferrari-rivalling acceleration, accompanied by a distinctive engine note.

BMW has electronically limited their cars to 155mph, as have the other German manufacturers, for many years. Several models over many years have been able to achieve that speed including the E32 750IL, various 850i, 850ci, 850csi, M3, M5, and M6's. There are probably a few more, but the answer is that it really is a tie between many, many models. Also, they change the limiter down on some 155mph capable cars dependent on what speed rating the OEM tires are rated.

the mclaren f1 had a bmw v12 in it. so if you want to count that as a bmw, then it would definitely be the fastest with a top speed of 240mph.

If you want to more about the McLaren, here's a couple of documentary videos:

...they're a little outdated though, since the Koenigsegg (http://www.koenigsegg.com/) is now the world's fastest production car, and sorry, it's not powered by BMW.
