Basically, I'd like to transfer certain files from my laptop (which runs windows XP home edition) to my desktop (which runs windows XP professional edition). They share a cable internet connection through a Linksys WRT54G router. Any ideas on the best way to get the best speed/reliability on the transfer without having to use P2P file sharing programs or any other virus-ridden corners of the internet?

on the left hand side u shud find: setup home office network.
click next twice>select ignore discon h/ware if that shows up
select the 2nd option-computer conected thru residential gateway>enter computer name n descriptioon
next choose a name for the network-its mshome by default
next select the option where it says not to create disk(or sth similar)
lastly choose printer and file sharing

on the other computer u folo the same steps. (make sure u choose diferent name and description for each computer) but where it asks for network name u have to enter the same as on the other computer (default being mshome)

carry on in the same way. u might have to restart both computers.
lastly open my network places and select view network computers.
if ur firewall is messing abt plz change its settings. u r now conected to the other computer.
u can copy paste as u wish.
any more help plz email me. n keep us updated

i should point out that as a security measure only limited folders can be viewed from the other computer. should u want to share more folders u have to do that individually-right clik the folder>properties>i believe its the last tab :) > from there select share folder

Set up a basic home network. Create a Shared drive on both PCs and give sharing and security right to both PC to that drive.
Or you can use a special cable to connect both PCs.

No need to use the internet.

all you need to do is connect the computers to the same workgroup, (I would make a new one so it's not the default that everyone has) then share a folder on each computer and then go through your windows explorer and move the files from one to the other.

you can share it with ease. first you have to put the required folder in C: drive of the person you wish to share. secondly you should know the computer name provided by the person. when you are logged in your pc, press start and run, followed by two backslash (\\) and the name of the pc you wish to share the file. press enter you will be able to share the folder of other pc. I hope this will work for you. Please do let me know.
