Diastasis Recti: Separated Abs (sometimes called mummy tummy)
If yours has not gone away with exercise and time you may need surgery. You have to be careful because this condition can herniate. The correction surgery is basically a tummy tuck so you won't want to have that done until you are completely finished having children.

Diastasis Recti is the natural separation of abdominal muscles which occurs during pregnancy. For some women, it returns to normal on its own; many times it does not.
During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles separate as they are making room for a growing baby. The amount of separation varies, depending upon muscle tone, exercise habits, weight gain and number of pregnancies.

The space between the abdominal muscles may return to normal on it's own, during the first few weeks after birth. However, for many women, the gap between the muscles remains. This is more likely to occur with subsequent pregnancies, as the abdominal muscle tone decreases.

Separation of abdominal muscles is a cause of back pain during pregnancy. Helping the abdominal muscles return to their regular position is also important because these muscles hold the abdominal organs in place.

In order to regain abdominal muscle tone, exercise is required. But before choosing which abdominal exercises you will do, it is necessary to check your abdominal muscles to see whether or not they have come back together.

If the muscles are still separated, some of the exercises that you used to do, or those that other people may be doing, could actually cause the gap to remain or to widen. Exercises such as sit-ups, crunches and some variations of both should not be done while the muscles are separated.

Instead, look for exercises that work the transverse muscles. The transverse muscles are deeper within the body, on the right and left sides of the abdomen. By exercising and strengthening the transverse muscles, you will cause them to draw the rectus abdominis (muscles on the front of the abdomen, or "six-pack") closer together.

Some care providers and exercise instructors do not discuss Diastasis Recti with women before recommending exercise. Please check your abdominal muscles before you begin! It only takes a few minutes and you can do it at home.
