The average bestseller is turned down ten times before it's published. Rowling (who is now richer than the queen) had her first book turned down by every publisher she could initially find.

If you submit your book to be published, it is almost certain to be turned down. Over and over.

What you have to understand is that this does not mean your book is bad. I've spoken to editors in large publishing houses who anguish over the many absolutely terrific books that they are unable to sell to the higher-ups, and the absolute dreck that is often published instead.

Boards of publishing companies are often beholden to stock-holders. Competition is fierce. As a result, they don't often take chances.

These are the realities of the publishing business today. If you are a pessimist, this will dishearten you. Authors cannot afford to be pessiments. Try anyway. And again and again and again. Paper your wall with rejection letters (I have). And don't let them stop you even then!

By all means go to a publisher... and GET turned down, who cares. Life is for learning.
It is not the end of the world if your first novel isn't a best seller.
You may get some constructive criticism from someone IN THE BUSINESS who can help you improve.

Go go go to a publisher and start your career as a writer from the bottom. I'm sure John Steinbeck wrote a few experimental stories at first....good luck.

While all the answers are good, all ignore the obvious.

That is this: No agent, publisher's reader or even the Easter Bunny will read your manuscript if you can't be bothered to spell ordinary English words correctly.

Before you send it anywhere, use the spell checker, then copy read it again and again. Do not rely solely on the computer spell checker. Use the dictionary when unsure, look at an American usage and style book, make sure you use proper grammar, punctuation.

It is work. But if you can't be bothered, why should any one bother to read your writing?

But if that fails or you're afraid of rejection you can try www.lulu.com It's a website that will publish your book for free no matter what and it's available for anyone to buy. You even get a copyright! I'm having a book published by them in a few months, so I'd def. recommend it to anyone! Good luck! -Alyssa

It sounds like it could be good. Never be afraid to try for fear of being turned down. How will you know if you don't try? If you get turned down, it's not that big of a deal. It doesn't mean your story was bad. I think you should try it. It can't hurt, and maybe you'll get somewhere!

Good luck!

Go for it, turn it in... If they turn it down, just try another publisher! If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!
