I can understand anger (for self defense) and distrust (for self-preservation). But why do we hate?

Hate is the result of the self defense part of our social make up.
Anger and distrust are compounded by regular reinforcement producing hate.

We hate because it is a self defense mechanism that we have that enables us to focus on the flaws of others instead of focusing on our own shortcomings. That way we are able to think in our weak minds that it is them, not us. That they are to blame and we are the victim. To be able to lead a much more serene life, we must acknowledge this and when we feel hate, look within ourselves to find the reason. That can be changed. You cannot change what is outside of you. You have the power to not hate.

I think hate is a way of taking focus off ourself and enabling walls to form around us for protection. It keeps feelings on the outside of these walls.

Hate, in itself, is nether "bad or good." It's just a visible line within ourselves to show us where we draw-the-line. (A no-go area, so to speak)
It's what we chose to do with it...that makes all the difference in the world.
(I "hate" evil things...So, I don't do them.)
See, not "all" forms of hate are bad.
