You need four years to get a BS or BA. Your major doesn't matter -- but you must take all the classes needed for admission to medical school. It is suggested that you do more. Most students major in biology or chemistry.

You then need to spend four years in medical school to get your MD.

After getting an MD, you finally get to specialize. The internship and residency lasts at least three years -- but could go longer. After that, you would want to become board certified.

So -- the whole thing takes at least 11 years.

It doesn't matter what you major in as long as you complete all of the pre-requisites for medical school. Most people major in a science because the majors tends to have most if not all of the pre-requisites for medical school. After you are accepted into medical school you will study general medicine and then you choose what you want to specialize in. Ex: Plastic Surgery or Cardiology.

You don't have to have any particular major. But I would suggest biology as the only logical choice.

After you get your B.S (which takes 4 years) then you need to apply to medical school. Then there is residency and internship.

This whole process takes about a decade.
