There was an independent Macedonian society in Ancient Greece. It was the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. (Don’t confuse it with a modern republic that is Slavic/Albanian).
What a lot of people don’t know is that in ancient years Greece did not existed as a state. There were a lot of independent Greek states! Like Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Macedon (or Greek-Macedonia).
The ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia is almost entirely in the Modern Greek borders and still today the most important archaeological sites are in authentic Macedonia of Greece!
Ancient Macedonians were part of a larger Greek tribe called Dorian. They were very close related to the Spartans and their royal family originated from the Greek city of Argos and from Hercules (Yes the mythological Greek hero!) himself!
With the influence of great philosophers –like Aristotle and Isocrates- the Macedonian royal family undertake the great task to unite the Greek states against -the long lasting enemy- the mighty Persian empire.
Philip and especially his son Alexander were responsible for the global spread of the Greek civilization and culture in such a magnitude that almost the entire near east became Greek for centuries!
Of course all the evidence clearly proves that ancient Macedonians were Greeks. Every archaeological discovery from every part of Ancient Macedonia is typical Greek. Every inscription, monument, tomb, coin is written in pure Greek. And ofcourse we have the testimonies of the Macedonians themselves claiming that they were Greeks!
(... Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Greece I should not have come to tell you; but I am myself Greek by descent, and I would not willingly see Greece exchange freedom for slavery.... If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the Greek cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians. I am Alexander of Macedon."
(Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45)
And this: "Your ancestors invaded Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury;... I have been appointed Hegemon of the Greeks... "
(Arrian, II, 14, 4)
And one more:
"Now that the men of this family are Greeks, sprung from Perdiccas, as they themselves affirm, is a thing which I can declare on my own knowledge, and which I will hereafter make plainly evident. That they are so has been already adjudged by those who manage the Pan-Hellenic contest at Olympia"
(Herodotus, The Histories 8.43)
There are of course hundred more such references but there is not enough room to mention them all!!!
Later on the ancient Macedonians homogenized with the rest of the Greeks and from the amalgamation of the Greek tribes the Modern Greek nation was formed!
Today the region of authentic-Macedonia of Greece has a population of 2 and half million Greeks that claim descent from the ancient Greek Macedonians!
There is also a small (in size) country in the Balkans that use the name “republic of Macedonia”. That country has no relation with authentic Greek Macedonia but instead it is a small Slavic/Albanian –state (around 60% Slav-Macedonians and around 35% Albanian-Macedonians). Officially the policy of that state is that they are not related to Alexander and Greek Macedonia.
Here is what the first President of FYROM (Slavic/Albanian- Macedonia), Kiro Gligorov said: “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35). Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia… Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
(Unofficially there is an effort to present themselves as “real Macedonians and not Slavs” and unfortunately there are some fanatic Slavs who expresses pure unhistorical views!)
To sum things up, ancient Macedonians were Greeks and still there are 2and half million Greek-Macedonians. There are also modern Slav-Macedonians and modern Albanian-Macedonians.

you're very apprehensive my chum. did no longer you lose interest writing those form of? ok, i will understand which you're desperate for having an historic identity notwithstanding that's relatively undesirable attempting to scouse borrow somebody else's background. each and every knowledgeable and civilised guy on earth is familiar with the actuality. each and every thing else is purely a trick of politicians (like Tito).as properly, all and sundry is familiar with what number issues the two international places have, that's humorous arguing approximately those concerns. So,you could say in spite of you choose yet ask your self what "Macedonia" skill on your language. In my language has a meaning, in yours? it is so basic somebody to appreciate what is going on. Many kisses from Greece!!! playstation : with tips from the way there are some books of background which you will examine to open your eyes and that i'm particular which you will no longer discover them to the rustic of Skopia.seek the internet to check some real background and not all that ***** they are studying you!

I don't want to confuse you further but ignore what that guy above writes. He is a fanatic slav-macedonian that he is also confused.
Let me explain you the situation:
In ancient Greece, there were many different greek cities-states,as Athens or Sparta etc.Every city has its own "government",its own king and its own political system. But they were all of them Greeks.Exactly the same was happening with Macedonia.Macedonia was a Greek state in northern Greece. Some of their kings were Philipp and his son Alexander who is famous nowdays as Alexander the Great!
Alexander the Great and all the Macedonians were Greek and it is something that noone can deny.First of all,all the names as Alexander,Philipp or Olympiada(Alexander's mother) are Greek:
Alexander which is Alexandros normally comes from alex and andros which means "defending men".Philippos comes from philos (friend) and ippos (horse) ,it means the one who is friendly with horses ,who loves the horses. As it concerns the name Olympiada you can understand it I guess.
Even the word Macedonia is totally Greek.
All those words we use them up to know in our every day communication.
Aristotle was the teacher of Alexander who was born in Stagira, a village that still exists in Macedonia(Greece).
From the other side, the fact that Alexander the Great was Greek is real because of this too:in the ancient Olympic games, only Greeks could participate.Alexander the Great and all the rest of Macedonians were taking part to these games.
The last one is that Alexander himself ,named his self as the king of all Greeks when he began the war again Persians and his army that had soldiers from all over Greece managed to reach India.Alexander was speaking the Greek language,of course and he inspired all the east with the Greek civilisation. The era after his death called Hellenistic(in greek means "Greek").
So,what is happening with that tiny country northern Greece who wants that part of history to steal it from Greece?
I will explain you:First of all the northern part of Greece is still called Macedonia since ancient years, from Alexander's era and it never stopped. Its capital is Tessaloniki which is co- capital of Greece.
Former Yugoslavia was a union of different communist countries up to the beggining of 90's.Countries as Bosnia,Serbia,Croatia etc. There were huge differences between those countries.Differences in religion,in culture and in financial situation. For example,Croatia was a wealthy country and Fyrom was a very poor country.Bosnia was a muslim country and Serbia was a christian Orthodox country.
All those differences were going to destroy Yugoslavia one day and also communism was not going well in the whole world.
Tito, a yugoslavian politician understood that.He knew that Yugoslavia were going apart in few years. So,what is going to happen with the location of Skopia(Fyrom) which its residents are coming some of them from Albania ,some of them from Bulgaria and few Greeks in Monastiri(they call it Bitola)?Their language is a bulgarian dialect also!
He thought something clever but very bad.He began a propaganda that this state should be called Macedonia and that the residents are descendants of Alexander the Great!!!
They also claim that they want to unit with the Macedonia in Greece. That is happening for financial reasons. They wanted to have access to Aegean Sea and to the port of Thessaloniki for commercial reasons.
All that story is really funny for educated people:I have talked a lot of times with non-Greek who have studied greek history and they all say the same words:"You Greeks are totally right but people don't know history".
But,in the whole world people is not obligated knowing Greek history so it is created a confusion. The time that Tito began all that crazy project,Greece had many internal problems as the civil war and the in 70's we had a very bad political system. In 1974 democracy came back in Greece. So,with all these problems noone managed to see what Yugoslavians were trying to do.
Right now, they have pursuaded all the residents in Fyrom(not all,I know some who know the truth and they are asame af all this situation) that they come from Alexander the Great that their language which is slavic(bulgarian dialect) is the language that Alexander the Great was speaking(lol) and they try to pursuade all the planet.
It is a tiny country with no specific nationality thirsty and desperate for heroes. From the other side americans help that tiny country. For what? They sent all their nuclear waste in Fyrom. That is very dangerous for health and of course they don't keep them in the states. So,they thrown all of them in the land of Fyrom.
You maybe can not understand how greeks feel about it:it is unfair coming someone and steal your history.
Think about that:I don't know if you are american but, let's say that Mexico is destroyed because its bad political situation and the northern part of it,its called from its residents Texas and they all claim that Texans are a different nationality from Americans!Crazy,eh?Of course Usa it is a strong country and it will stop that but Greece is not a big country and the others get help from Americans etc.

I wish I helped you.All the things I wrote you above exist in books or you can search it in the web.

Of course their was a independent Macedonian society in history! You are probaly confused by Greece's propaganda towards the Macedonians!!! Let me briefly explain it to you and I will give you some sources!!! Todays country Macedonia was divided after the Balkan wars in 1912-1913!! Greece,Bulgaria, Albania have territories! The rest of Macedonia when under Yugoslavia! When Greece got this territory they wiped out anything to do with the Macedonians!! This was well organized by the Greek government!! People were not allowed to speak the Macedonian language, whoever did was beaten!! Names of Cities,Villages lakes and rivers were change to Greek names!! Churches were destoryed and were brought back in Greek writing!! People had to change there names in order to stay in this territory!!Macedonians were stripped of their Human Rights! So many Macedonians fled this area leaving their homes to strangers!! After this had happen Greece closed their Northern Borders!! The Macedonia that when under Yugoslavia was still called The republic of Macedonia!! So before 1988 if you would tell anybody in Greece that you are Macedonian they would say that there is no such thing as Macedonia and Macedonians!! But in 1988 they renamed the Northern region of Greece Macedonia and now say that there is a Macedonia but it is in Greece!! The Greek propaganda keeps on going!! They renamed this territory Macedonia because Yugoslavia was on its way of breaking up so they were scared that the republic of Macedonia is going to become a country again and that they will ask for their land back from the other countries!! That is why the Greeks claim that Alexander the Great was theirs because he was born in the territory that was divided to them!! Still there are Large organizations from the Greek side that work on the Macedonia issue!! They came up with ancient coins that say Macedonia in Greek but there are no dates on these coins!! It is sad to see to what extend these people go to!! Today they still say that there are no Macedonians in this part!! But these people are not afraid to come out anymore!! As for the other two parts Bulgaria and Albania there are Macedonians living in this territory that was divided to them!! There also Bulgaria denies the exists of Macedonians!! Macedonia has gone threw alot over the centuries and still keeps on surviving what is left of her!! MACEDONIA FOR THE MACEDONIANS!!!
