I'm looking for something new to read or watch. Does anyone have any suggestions for books or movies a 13 year old would like? Please include authors names.

Just to clear up any confusion I am a really good reader. So books that are "young " are always better than kids books

When I was that age the Princess Bride was one of my favorite movies (and still is.) The book is really funny and great as well. It is by William Goldman.

For a 13 year-old, a lot would depend on their reading level and whether they enjoy reading. For a capable 13 year-old, The Lord of the Rings might be a good book.

Where the Red Fern Grows or Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. Old Yeller and other classics.

I read The Count of Monte Cristo a few years ago and I think that would be fine for a 13 year-old.

For something more historical try Don't Fence Me In by Barry Spanjaard - about a teenager in the Holocaust (see link). Or the ever popular Diary of Anne Frank.

Depending on the 13 year-old, they may be mature enough to get into Stephen King books - Eyes of the Dragon is a good one to start with.

If it's a 13 year-old that doesn't like to read or is a poor reader, try Harry Potter or the book Eragon was based on. I also enjoyed the books by E.B. White - The Trumpet of the Swan. Roald Dahl books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I read this amazing book called "Searching for David's Heart" by Cherie Bennett when i was like in 7th grade. It is my favorite book that I have ever read.....and i read a lot of books..no joke. There were tears on the page because i was crying so hard and i was so into the book i couldnt get a tissue to wipe my tears away. The book is about a girl and her search for her brothers heart. It touches you in such a way. All ages should read this book it is amazing. I read this story several times now and it touches my heart. It's just the best book you will ever read. And I really think that if you pass up the chance to read this then you're really missing out.

I also loved "Where the red fern grows" by Wilson Rawls. Its a book about a boy who wants 2 coon dogs, but his parents are poor. He finds an ad in the paper for two pups for 50 bucks. He works for 2 years and saves up the money. He travels out into the city to get his pups. He trains em and they become the best coon huntin dogs. In the end, the pups died( lil ann, the girl, died because she couldnt live w/o old dan) and old dan died after he had a fight with another animal. Where they were burried, a red fern grew. Its really a sad story of never giving up. I loved it a lot.

a great wholesome movie recently out on DVD is "Invincible" starring Mark Walberg... a true story... not boring, either... very inspirational and feel-good. it will remind you to never let go of your dreams. even my 13 year old daughter liked it, surprisingly... even though it took place back in the 70's, had no hott guys or hip-hop soundtrack. LOL

I read Stephen King when I was about nine. It all depends on the interests of the child really.

I think the "Chronicles of Narnia" by C. S. Lewis would be an excellent read for a young adult.
