I would love to give my next child a unique but not overly strange name. For example, I love the name Cain (for a boy) - but I'm sort of superstitious of the biblical reference...he did murder his brother Abel afterall! Am I being silly here?

I'm open to unique name suggestions (boys/girls). Please, if it's main stream, I've heard them all thanks.

Since it seems like you are into the meaning behind names, I would advice against any made up, trendy names. Try www.behindthename.com for reliable information and histories of names.

I personally like the name Finlay / Finnegan (nicknamed Finn, if he'd like). FNeither name is overused. I also like Orion, Piers, Soren, and Josiah. Cain is fine, but I am not a fan of the story behind it either.

For girls, I highly recommend avoiding the new trend of surnames as first names or using a boy name and claiming it is unisex, as these trends are going to look extremely dated in a decade or so. How about something like Anneliese, Bianca, Eve, Bronwen, Ruth, Julia, Rosemary... They are all underused and all have fabulous meaning behind them. One of my favorites is Sabine (sa-BEAN). Check out the story behind it, it's truely a special name.

Good luck to you!

If you love Cain, don't be afraid to use it! Just change the spelling. There is an English name, Kane, which is the Anglicized form of the Irish CATHÁN, meaning "battle". I think that the name has so many common words that are similar that the biblical Cain isn't the neccessarily the first reference that jumps into people's minds.

As for unique names, check out behindthename.com, it has seriously any name you could think of, along with origins and meanings.

A few of my favorite unusual names for girls are

Chryseis
Danaë
Epona
Eurydice
Evadne
Melisande
Océane
Persephone

I definitely wouldn't use the name Cain because of the biblical reference - I'm not overly religious, but why use a name with negative connotations when there are so many other cool names out there?

Just please keep in mind that your child is going to have to carry whatever name you give them for the rest of their life. They will get picked on, bullied, teased, and hassled if it's too weird. They will have to spell it, over and over again, every time they fill in a form or give their name to someone. Teachers will mispronounce it, future employers will make judgements on them before they even meet them.

Good luck!

You like Cain, but how about Kaden, or something close to Cain? I have also heard Kade as a name. Or maybe use Cain as a middle name.
Zackary Cain
Michael Cain, something to that effect.
For names a bit different, i have heard Draven which i think has a neatness to it.
Draven
Zane
Blake
Gage
Brayden
Ryland
Those are just what i can think of for different edgy names. Good luck!! Im still trying to figure out what im naming my son and hes due in 11 weeks!!

I understand where you are coming from with the Biblical referances with Cain...
Maybe you could spell it differently? So it's basically the same name, but isn't neccessarily the one from the Bible?
Just a thought... Good Luck! :-)

Well you are't being silly, ( no offense) but just alittle nieve. Its not like every Scott (Scott Peterson) is going to kill their wife! Or that every Mariltn will be beautiful (marilyn Monroe), or even that every Wynonna will be red headed, or that every Michael will be a singer. If you like the name then name him that, its your baby & you shouldnt base your opinion on the name just because someone with that particular name did something wrong or is a particular way.Go for it!! Unique names I LOVE are Kyla (girl) @ Isaiah (boy). Good Luck!!
