I can't stop wondering (maybe I missed something), how did Clive Owen's character know that the banker was a war criminal and that he had those jewels and kept that paperwork identifying himself as a war criminal? How did he know it was kept at that bank and in a safety deposit box? Why wouldn't he have presumed it was kept at the man's home or his office? I can't see how I missed all this explanation of how he knew all this information. Did I fall asleep?

I'm not a 100 % sure, but I don't think it was enclosed in the film. They never say specifically. You'll have to keep wondering. Sorry.
