another shop said they could do it for much cheaper if they're able to find the used parts. is it okay to replace with used parts?

it shouldnt cost no more then $700 to fix this, EVEN with brand new parts.
i am assuming you took it to a dealer. who 9 times out of 10 dont even do their gear work and send it to a shop who does.

new gears are around $150-$200, bearing kit is another $100.
the actual differential itself can be reused and at the most add new spider gears so that is another $75.
if it has the govlok (that would replace the spider gears) that would be another $175 but odds are since its 2wd it doesnt have that.
labor to set up new gears is around $200-$300.

or you could find just about any 10 bolt rear axle from a chevy truck and bolt it in (or depending on the year, you may have to move the spring mounts). 10 bolts are weak and a dime a dozen, so dont spend anymore then $250 for that.

That is too much! I paid $795 to have the rear end rebuilt on my 4x4 suburban, and that included new brake shoes, one axle and new ring and pinion with seals. You can pick up a used rear end for $500 complete. And, I did not mention this, but they had to balance my driveline.

Used axles start at about $900.00 here;

The parts to build a rear end are outrageous, always have been. Very few get re-built, it's just cheaper to replace the entire axle.

Used parts are usually OK for this problem, but the quote you got is too much, even with new parts. I'd expect to pay 1400 to 17oo MAX.
