Stay outside of the Red Light district. It's great to walk through and see the sites but it's full of drunk loud brits and shady crack dealers.
Coffeeshops are everywhere and the best ones are located outside of RLD. Most of the ones in the RLD are crappy...will sell crap weed and is probably overpriced.
Do look for accomodation in the Jordaan or museum district. Less crowded and more to see.
My top 5 coffeeshop list:
Barney's - on Harlemmerstraat & Reguliersgracht
Amnesia - on the Herengracht
Pink Floyd - harlemmerstraat
Rokerij - on singel
Grey Area - near amnesia...great sushi across the street
Have fun and p.s.... the RLD isn't all it's cracked up to be and there's a lot more to Amsterdam than weed and sex.

There are coffee shops everywhere so I wouldn't worry about finding a hotel by one. Coffee shops, however, are more prevalent in the red light district. If I were you I would try to get a hotel in the Jordaan district. It is close enough to all the major sights but at the same time is less touristy and also less expensive.

the coffee shops are everywhere, you don't even need to try to find them. They are in the red light district and out of it.
If you are looking for a good, clean, hotel, avoid, the red light district, head up towards the Rembrantsplein (may be misspelled, but its where the Rembrandt Museum is). Youll be out of the worst part of the town, but still pretty close to it all.

honestly, Amsterdam is what you're making it. in case you loiter round inebriated human beings, then sure, you'll see inebriated human beings. fortuitously, there is so a lot more effective to the city than some stupid drunks and some vacationers on a drug vacation. besides the obtrusive, besides the exciting (as reported, as an example, by way of Willeke) a good factor about Amsterdam is the very shown reality that some thing of the country is interior hassle-free attain by way of public shipping. visit Haarlem? particular, 20 minutes by way of practice. visit Rotterdam - you`re there interior an hour. there are an excellent type of curious little shops - a british distinctiveness save nicely hidden next to a brilliant comic keep as an example. i imagine that Amsterdam is a helpful city, and in case you act commonplace you`ll rejoice.

Coffee shops are in the Red Light district. Don't worry - you can't miss the DISTRICT - it's right in the middle of the city. And the city is not that big..
