Find a place you are interested in and search it up on apartmentratings.com! Meet with management, view the unit, make a budget between the two of you... Research the neighboorhood and other tenants! My apartment is a pos and a huge regret! See... forrent.com, craigslist.com, apartment.com, rent.com! Go to the grocery store and pick up a start renting guide! Also research quite a few places before selecting one! Carefully read over your lease! Alot of property managers can be crooks at large complexes! Alot of them will not give security deposits back regardless of the situation! Read over that contract very very carefully! Dont do anything more than a 12 month lease! Even a 6 month lease is a good bet if your unsure!

I would think SAFETY is the number ONE thing to look for in apartment hunting. Is the parking lot, apartment hallways, have a porch light, and buildings will lit. Check with the landlord in having emergency issues if something arises. Check with passed tenets that have lived there if possible. Check with your local police to see if there have been any crimes done in the area or apartment complex. Just be safe, I would think there are more crimes done to teenage girls then guys, so watch your back at all times, and do things in a group or tell someone where your going and will be back. THINK SAFETY!!!

the main thing you need to look out for is all the expenses of living in an apartment. teens often assume that rent is what it will cost to live there. you must consider utilities, food, car insurance, toilet paper, phone, internet, cable, shampoo and all the other things your parents have been providing. you must consider that a lease means you are responsible for the rent EVEN IF YOU MOVE OUT. And the other thing is that roommates often have disagreements (for example one doesn't pay the electricity bill because they lost their job etc or someone lets a friend stay or doesn't do the dishes. that is my advice.

That first answer is a good one, also think of whatever you are going to be paying in rent as just half of your expenses. Don't think that because you make 1000 a month you can afford an apartment anywhere near that much, otherwise you two will just be miserable and broke all the time.
