The Polygraph is a subjective exam at best. There is not ever and nor can there ever be an objective viewpoint of the Polygraph. For one, it is way to easy to defeat. Another thing is that the tester can influence the test via how they ask questions. There are so many variables in the test and each one of those variables can individually be called upon to call doubt on the validity of the test that it can never be used in a legitimate way. It is still used though as a gauge and nothing more than a gauge of the testee's trustworthiness. Honest people would not fear the test as they have nothing to hide. Deceitful people have everything to hide. The smart ones are the ones that the test can not find.

I had to take a polygraph once. As the tester was setting the machine, he asked me to stare at a blank wall. There were some scratches caused by the back of a chair. One such scratch looked like the outline of a low lying island near where I live. The tester asked what I was thinking about and I told him. He laughed and told me to try not to think. hehe I was given a set of numbers with a blank in the middle and was to write down a number. As he read the numbers off, he asked DID YOU WRITE THAT ONE? I had to answer no to all, including the number I wrote down. He said I would be an easy subject since even that lie caused the machine to react. Now, that was back in 1985 and I'm sure the machines have become more accurate since. The tester asked me the questions before I was hooked up, then repeated them in a different sequence. Some had to do with the reason I was there and some didn't. I passed with flying colors, by the way.

There is nothing objective about a polygraph. All the device measures is a persons reaction to a question - and from this the examiner makes a guess about whether the subject is or is not lying.

Polygraphs have never been scientifically proven.

The polygraph exam measures a persons heartbeat, respiratory and sweat produced during questioning. It is objective because people can not only beat the lie detector, they can also be trained to control their respiration. Since it is so objective and basically you look at the heart rate when answering questions that you should answer truthfully compared to others, it is questionable. It is accurate when conducted by trained professionals, but it isn't guaranteed so it is left out of the courts.

A polygraph can be fooled by a person who has taken a drug ahead of time or, for instance, has learned how to play games with the machine such as biting the tongue......no, polygraphs are not used in the courtroom, however, soon they may use the NEW brain scans that show when one lies the brain changes colors.......a polygraph without a drug screen...useless

It is very reliable. There is absolutely no way to
cheat the machine because different variations
are available. Regardless of health problems or countermeasures that indivduals may use to avoid
taking the test or to try to smudge the results. It
doesn't work to cheat.

The real reason it isn't used in court because polygraph results override false evidence and false testimony provided by surly/unreliable witnesses.
For example: If you are asked "Did you sleep with
this person?" you answer yes or no
You are asked either 1 or 3 questions related to
the first question.
If you have non-related questions, they will be
asked on another test.
Trust me lots of innocent people can have their lives destroyed by lies.
The ONLY DEFENSE is to use a lie detection
service.
