As with every city in this great nation, there are good areas and bad areas -- places tourists pay lots of money to stay and places you need to avoid when the sun goes down. Baltimore is no different in that regard from any other city. There are some "trashy" neighborhoods, no doubt, but really there's a very broad spectrum of people that live here.

There are a hundred little sub-cultures in the Baltimore city limits alone -- Highlandtown (pronounced Hollantewn, Hon!), Greektown, Little Italy, swankified Canton, artsy and historic Fells Point, etc.

The irony is that the Inner Harbor -- THE tourist spot is fairly culture-less and uninteresting on the whole because most people you'd come across there are tourists from all over the country and the world.

The inner harbor is a fun area -- don't get me wrong -- but you haven't really SEEN Baltimore until you've gone to Little Italy for some homemade pasta and Vacarro's pastries, gone to Matthew's Pizza on Eastern Avenue and eaten gyros at Samos in Greektown. Oh what a town! :-)

Yes it's ghetto. I grew up on the northwest side of Baltimore. The Jewish community wasn't bad but we would still get stuff stolen. Hear gun shots from other neighborhoods, and see the occasional police flying through the block. Even though my neighborhood wasn't ghetto , were I went to school and played with my friends was. I saw some horrible things. If your a out of towner stick to downtown. If not bmore careful Moe!

Yeah, I was on business there last summer. Me and a couple of colleagues went to ESPN Zone. On the way out went around the wrong corner, and all of a sudden we were in the hood. We say one kid with swinging a 3 foot metal chain while the other held a baseball in his hands. It left me with a good first impression of the city.

Not ghetto enough to keep the Washingtonians from coming up here and driving up our real estate prices.
