I am 32 and I am having a really hard time with the notion that I have to work until I am like 65. I mean I think this is not the way is intended to be.
I have friends and of course they are similiar ages as me. So I am wondering is my generation lazy or is this just something that all people think about.
Bottom line is I think it sucks. I hate the fat for the next 33 years I have to devote about 60% of my time working. I hate it, hate it, hate it. By the way I like my job just hate this whole idea of working until I am too old to really enjoy anything.
So please tell me your thoughts.

I hear ya.... It kills me to think of working till age 65 but I know I must and hoard as much money as possible along the way so I can do the traveling I so desire.

I am thinking its our generation though I think possibly all generations have felt this way but didn't express it. My parents grew up with parents telling them to suck it up and shut up so I don't think they voiced it.

Invest heavily so you can do the things you love when you retire and that means do things for good health to so you are physically fit to enjoy them.

: )

Happy Tuesday !!

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the full retirement age for people born after 1960 is now 67 (according to Social Security). I am also within your generation and the thought that I will have to spend another 30+ years working is frightening. For those of us in our 30s, it's difficult to conceive spending another lifetime in the workforce. I can't speak for other generations, but I don't think its just ours that had this difficulty. However, I will say that it seems as if the work ethic has declined in the past few decades (myself included), so that could definitely be a contributor. We're growing up in an age of convenience, when we can buy groceries on the internet, have conversations with people in China without having to dial a phone, and automated computers are taking over previously mundane activities. It could be that we are becoming more lazy because we are allowing ourselves to become consumed by all these conveniences and technologies. When was the last time any of us got up to change the channel? I'm guessing that the last time we lost the remote, we wandered around the living room, searching for the remote for 15 minutes, when we could have changed the channel in mere seconds. This is the phenomena I'm talking about.
So, no, its not just you.

you dont have to work till you are 65 you have choices, 1.stop working whenever you want and let the government take care of you, but you wont be able to do anything since you wont get enough money to do so. 2. start planning now put money aside, invest in some safe stocks, buy a house and fix it up, preferably a duplex so you can rent part of it out to pay the mortgage, repeat as often as you can, eventually you will have enough real estate and stocks that you can enjoy life without working. 3. learn to live off the land, all you need is an old shopping cart and a cardboard box, an old hat will help in collecting coins, just make sure you get a good location for begging and you might be able to turn it into a franchise!

At least you can retire when you're 65. By the time my generation is 65, there will be no money left in Social Security and all of our taxes will be going to you. Be thankful. Some people have to work for their whole lives just to earn enough to put some food on the table.

I would say that you are in need of an attitude adjustment. If I were you, I would try to look at my situation very closely. Obviously, you are not as happy as you think you are in your current job. Is this just a job, or is it your career? Are you doing what you have a passion for, or did you settle for whatever else came along? Do you REALLY enjoy your job, or do you just like the people you work with. If you find that you are not doing something that you truly enjoy, you might want to consider finding out just what type of career you will enjoy. How? (Good question) I would talk to the career counselor at the local junior college. They should be able to help you find what it is that you would love to do and what you would be great at. Then you can begin pursuing that avenue. I think that once you find yourself truly enjoying your career, then you will be thankful that you are healthy enough to continue working until you are 65... Good luck and I hope this helps.

I understand you. Look at the little children, they don't like to just sit and do nothing. They like to do things and get pissed if interrupted. My advice is to use your creativity and find a way to get money from doing the things that you like to do (whatever that might be). This is how you have a job and live your life in the same time.
I guess it's not about age or generation, it's how we are.

It sounds like you need to find a career that's more enjoyable to you than whatever you're doing now.

I live in Florida and most of the over 65's I know that aren't in nursing homes are still involved in something you might call work.

It's not you, your age or your generation. There are many of us who feel this way - all ages. :)

At your age you should be able to work something out so you can retire early with proper investments... get hold of a decent financial planner and see what you can work out.

Welcome to the club. Working does kill time, because when you stay home all day, everyday, after a while it gets boring.
If you're a woman, find a decent man, and maybe you can work part time or quit.
Nice to know you work, most young people don't work and get things for nothing.
