They are less than a mm in size and almost invisible to they eye they have been bothering both me and my cat for the last three months. They like to land on my head in my hair and around my eyes and may be carnivourus or parasitic. they are too small to catch, and i have found at least 100 other accounts that are of very similar if not identical infestations online with a search engine yet and yet no one seems to have a definitive awnser to what type of bug it is? Can ANYONE identify it. I know that it would be insane to think it a new undiscovered species?

Try to capture some in a jar.
Take them to a certified entomologist. The State University Extension Agencies typically have someone like that on staff.

You might also contact local exterminators. They tend to be knowledgeable about the insects that bother people in their geographical area.

Fruit flies, while small, are *not* "almost invisible. They have fairly fat bodies, and tend to be found near fruit or garbage.

Fruit flies. Try cleaning all your counters and floors with bleach or Pine Sol Concentrated. Sometimes you think you wiped food off your counter or tiny drops fall onto the floor. They attract these flies and they hang around until they find what they smell.

Hi Clyde,

Did you ever identify what kind of insect was bothering you and your cat? My sister has a similar situation and I have had no luck with my research on the internet identifying the species or finding a product to eradicate it.

Thanks in advance.

Fruit flies. There are sprays you can get at basically any store that you can use to get rid of them. They lay eggs in food. It happend in dog food at my house once, so it could probably happen wherever you store your cat food. That's where you may find the source.

gnats or flees, but most likely nats, check to see if you have any rotten fruit, potatoes, or anything like that stashed some where. Happened to me threw out the rotten potatoes and sprayed some bleach were they were hiding. No more gnats

Drosophila meongaster (fruit flies). Do some genetic experimenting with them for eye color to be sure!

As much as I hate to tell you this, it sounds like lice to me. Fruit flies are much too large for what you are talking about. You may have gotten it from your cat. Definitely check in with your doctor on this one or check to see if they follow you when you aren't at home.
