It shouldn't hurt to put a tampon in. The first few times might feel strange, but it shouldn't hurt you.

The people who said that you shouldn't use them are just silly. Of course you can use a tampon if you're a virgin! And using a tampon does not make you NOT a virgin. If the blood can come out of you, then you can put a tampon in, most likely. Of course, in some rare instances, the hole in your hymen could be very small, too small to comfortably put a tampon in. But that's unlikely. The most likely reason for having it hurt when trying to put a tampon in is because you're using a cardboard applicator (yuck!!!), you're not aiming it correctly, you're not taking your time, you're tense, or your flow isn't heavy enough to let it slip in easily.

Here's some tips for you:
1. Use Playtex Slimfits, they're skinny and have a really smooth plastic applicator. I think they still make them, but I'm not positive. Playtex Gentle Glide also has a smooth plastic applicator. That's the kind I always use, the Regular absorbency, unscented kind. (I think it's not good to put scented things down there, it just invites trouble.) Make sure you start with the lowest absorbency. If it soaks through too quickly, you can always go up a size once you're used to them.

2. Make sure you read the instructions!!! Aim towards your lower back, and go slowly.

3. Try when your period is really heavy, most likely your 2nd day (but of course, everyone's different!)

4. Make sure when you insert it, it goes in all the way to where your fingers are gripping, then push the plunger thing all the way in, THEN pull the plastic bits out. Don't pull the big plastic part out while you're pushing the plunger in.

5. Take your time! Make sure you have enough privacy (a public restroom stall probably isn't the best place to do it at first), and RELAX. If you're tense, your muscles down there will squeeze tight and you won't be able to get the tampon in. If it doesn't work the first time, take it out, and try it again.

Another hint, for when you take it out/change it:
Wait until it's completely saturated if you can (but if it's been 8 hours, you need to take it out anyway), because otherwise there's a weird pulling feeling you get, because the cottony stuff isn't wet enough. It's not painful, but it just feels weird.

Here's a website where you can get a free tampon sample:
Playtex Sport (I haven't tried these yet)

If you are a virgin, you may have some trouble with tampons. Your best bet, is to get the junior thin-sized ones. Make sure you are relaxed, and try crouching, or sitting on the toilet when you do it, and try slouching back a little. You -are- going to have to touch yourself to get it in, which can be a little akward, so don't do it if you aren't comfortable with it. The angle is a little different for each person, but try angling the tampon as if you were pushing it up towards your lower back,

Don't force it though - if it hurts too much, you may want to try an alternative, such as thong panty-liners, until you get the hang of it.

Good luck!

You should use tampons with a plastic applicator. Cardboard applicators can be painful. Try to relax. Breathe. Stand or lay down and place your finger inside. If your finger can go in comfortably the tampon can too. Take your time and try to insert it the same way you did your finger. Good luck. It took me the longest time to figure it out but it will happen.

First off buy the regular absorption ones, they are skinnier and easier to pull out when done. Also get the plastic applicators, they are so much easier to use and glide in instead of having to be pushed in. Good luck

well...its hard to use it for the first time. everybodys different. it might take you longer than other people. once you get used to it, it wont hurt as badly. just try ocasionally and eventually you'll be able to do it. in the meantime...i suggest not wearing thongs when you get your period...good luck!

use Tampax slim fits, or tampons that have a plastic round tipped applicator. read the instructions carefully, it explains very well on how to use them comfortably.
