I'm just wondering what a person should expect to pay if I shared a (halfway clean) 2 bedroom in Manhattan? Can a middle-class person expect to live decently in Manhattan, or should I live in an outer borough and commute? If so, what are good areas to live in the other boroughs at a reasonable price?

I would imagine somewhere around $1500 per month for each person. As a New Yorker I feel Manhattan is very expensive in terms of rentals and purchases however, you are paying for location. There are plenty of areas close to NYC that are a short commute and much less for rent. I am a big fan of Forest Hills and Bayside (Queens); they are much cheaper and for $1500 you could get a one - two bedroom apartment. There are many nice areas in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens) you will pay more than Queens though.
