NO, NO VERY MUCH NO!
He's good but there are so many others that are just as good if not better. I don't think even he would accept that accolade

as an afterthought for those above;
Weller played in a punk band = drugs?
he freely admits to Beatles influence so???
so why don't we all agree to disagree on this one because at the end of the day it's all down to personal taste.
But first listen to the words and music of Ian Anderson [Jethro Tull] before you compare song writing skill and the skill of the word smith, it's like comparing Shakespear to Enid Blyton, both have their unique writing ability, but are literally [yes a pun] worlds apart

Absolutely, the songs Weller wrote at 17 sound as fresh and as relevant as they did back in the olden days when I was young!! He wasn't afraid to play with a whole range of styles and experiment with different genres. His enduring popularity amongst young "cutting edge" musicians is testament to this. And lyrically, there is NOTHING the Beatles ever wrote can compare to Private Hell. The level of empathy for a middle aged relationship a young guy barely out of his teens shows in that song is humbling.

So stick yer beatles et al in a yellow submarine, Weller never wrote any childish drivel or simplistic, commercial bilge and still has never sold out.

The Beatles, whatever age you are, are a band for your parent!

The Modfather will ALWAYS be up there. He's a genius.I cant understand how he isn't recognised as an all time great by more people. The Jam were my favourite band man, when they broke I thought this is it but The Style Council were fantastic,Weller alone is even sharper now BEST song writing without a doubt

Loved The Jam but i think Weller needs a haircut now, far too old for that sort of thing! Has produced some outstanding lyrics though ' Brand New Start', classic !!

Who the hell is Paul Weller.
As someone else replied earlier,Lennon and McCartney, are not only the best British song writers ever, but probably the best song writers from anywhere in the world.
You are obviously a very narrow minded, ill informed, Bonehead !!!
Have a nice day.

No way. The Lennon/McCartney team or even Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison as individuals way beat out Paul Weller.

Umm, Neil youthful and Alanis Morissette are both Canadian... And why are you putting Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, The Used, Papa Roach, and Shinedown interior an identical classification as red Floyd, Led Zep, The Beatles, etc. ?

Perhaps not best ever, but streets ahead of those over-rated scouse gits. Simple pop songs for the simpletons, that's the kind of drivel Lennon/McCartney wrote.
Love Me Do, Please Please Me, She Loves You etc. I've got a 3 year old who can write better songs. Both lyrically and musically inept. No substance, no feeling, no nothing. Bland elevator music, that's all it's good for.

Weller, Difford/Tilbrook, Strummer/Jones, Marriot/Lane, difficult to plck out one as the best ever but. just going by your name I guess Jim Bob and Fruitbat must rank quite on your own list as they do on mine!!!
