If you want want to be able to sing and play along in solo fashion, learn the guitar. If you plan on being in a 3+ man band, you will likely have both backing up your vocals. Your range is irrelevant as to which instrument to play in this situation.

Basically bass is easier to learn to play than guitar (assuming you don't have small hands like me). However, personally, I find it harder to play bass while singing - not to mention, you can stop playing rhythm for a bit if you have a good lead guitarist and you need the bass to continue keeping the beat. You'll see in some bands that the singer will play rhythm along in some songs and focus on purely vocals in other songs (such as REO Speedwagon). However, if you are more coordinated (talented) than me there have been some great Bass Player/Singer combinations (Thin Lizzy and Rush come to mind).

My advice - start with guitar. I think you'll like it better. Furthermore, be SURE your playing doesn't take away from your vocal performance.

Electric guitars are are based on scale length. I'll try to keep this as simple as I can: A bass is more difficult to play because there is more distance between the frets. However, there are shorter scale basses as well as shorter scale guitars.

You should go to a music store like Guitar Center and try out some guitars. If you're just beginning, then I would recommend the Daisy Rock Guitar line.

A bass guitar just does bass lines, no chords, so it's basically impossible to sing with. Get a regular string 6 string electric guitar if you're looking to sing and play guitar at the same time.
And don't worry, we all have to start somewhere!:-]

The range in which you sing has no bearing on the instrument. Guitars (acoustic or electric) are typically used for solo performances while the bass is typically a background instrument for playing in a band (sorry Geddy and Sting and all those fantastic bassists out there).

I have seen solo bassists with nothing but them and their bass on stage and it was awesome, but the more common arangement is singer/guitar.
