Pay increases for congress are supposed to be tied to the cost of living. However since the cost of living went down in 2006 I'm sure they will find a way to give themselves some extra cash.

Congress being in charge of their own pay is akin to leaving the kids in charge of the cookie jar. My belief has always been that Congress should not make more than average salary nationally. It should be noted though that Congress does not vote for their increase. The increase is automatic. What they have to do is vote against it and they just never do this.

Yes we should, but since that is considered a budget matter, the courts have given them jurisdiction to vote themselves pay raises.
You CAN however, vote against any incumbent in your district or any senator from your state who votes themselves a pay raise without justification to your satisfaction.

Yes it should.
Oh but wait aren't we technically voting for it, since we elect them to represent us.
It should be put up to a vote by the people though, then our politicians might actually listen to what the people want.

Yes...but I don't think they'd ever get a raise, so that's why it will never be up to us! But c'mon...why are they allowed to give themselves raises whenever they feel like it? Tacking a pay raise onto a bill really gets my goat, too. Grr!

That would be interesting, but that would probably mean they would NEVER get a raise.
