The most popular guitarist of all time would have to be Hendrix. Just the word guitar or the sight of a fender strat makes you think of Jimi with his bandana setting his guitar on fire. While he may not be the most skilled guitarist he is, without a doubt, the most popular and infulential guitarist of all time. However, I can name a million and a half shred players that would put Jimi to shame anyday.

Frank Zappa was a guitar genius. He was technically and inventively miles ahead of any contemporary guitarist of his time.
Hendrix was an inventive genius, but technically not so sound (he played the damn thing upside down for a start).
Tommy Emmanuel is also a brilliant player encompassing many styles - his brother Phil is no slouch either.
Steve Vai, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn there are many others who deserve a mention. However the top of the heap (for me) will always be Zappa.

I think it has to be EVH. He revolutionized just about every aspect of rock guitar. He invented new techniques. He rigged gear and created a unique and beautiful tone by building his equipment from scratch and tweaking amps and such.

He plays with an intensity and relentlessness that has never been matched. His trechnique is very good. He created a unique style that has never been duplicated. His solos are musical. His harmonies are interesting. His rhythm playing is very high quality. His adherence to beat and rhythm is ferocious and precise. His vibrato is georgeous, you can swim in it.

In short, the guy is the closest thing to the God of guitar that I think we will ever see.

Honorable mention: Jeff Beck, Randy Rhodes, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons.

In my mom's generation the guitar heroes, are Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page. In my generation SLASH, hey the guy doesn't read music, he plays it by ear, that's awesome!!

Stevie ray Vaughn
He could play a mean guitar
he was so fast
it is difficult to play and sing but he did both so well
his music was awesome and his playing was just as great.
There are others that are great also but Stevie is my pick
especially for the way he held his guitar while playing.
he moved, sang and played like it was so natural.
