I would advise you not to drink coffee. Caffeine is not recommended when you are on your period because it increases the water retention. I don't know about Bananas. I would recommend a heat pack ( you can get one at any drug store) and place it over your uterus for about 10-20 minutes. Also take medications such as advil, motrin because it has ibuprofen. That will definetely help with the pain. Drugs like Pamprin and Midol don't help because they have acetometaphine. We all know that Tylenol does nothing for cramps. I would drink lots of water too.

Your aunt said coffee because caffeine helps periods, and your cousin said bananas because potassium helps ease the pain.

Take a hot bath and massage your muscles. Or put a hot water bottle on it.

Take motrin, advil, etc. You can take midol but it is only mortin with caffeine.

Exericising helps alot because it warms up your muscles.

If your menstrual cramps are painful, you may think about taking some type of the over-the-counter medication for one to two days.

You should use ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) or naproxen sodium (Aleve). Make sure you read the label as to how much and how often you should take the medication. You should not take these medications if you are allergic to aspirin-like medications or have stomach problems (such as ulcers).

Make sure you eat something before taking any of these meds.

your aunt is saying caffeine will help. it does in some people.

your cousin says a banana because potassium helps with muscle cramps. this helps more in leg cramps, etc.

personally, i'm a big fan of the birth control pill helping for period cramps. well than and advil.

good luck. grap a heating pad, chill on the couch and have a cup of tea. see if it helps.

Coffee is really bad for me when I'm on my period - it dehydrates the already over-working body and tends to make my cramps worse. You should try it and not just take my word for it, but it may actually make it worse. I know it's rough and you probably just want to veg-out, but exercise actually will ease the pain...it only needs to be a short, brisk walk, but movement tends to keep the pain down.

Midol menstrual really helps me. I also found that a little exercise before, during, and after my period helps to take away and soothe my cramps. Walking, running, lifting weights, yoga, etc, helps to make my period not as bad as it can be. Hope that helps.
