It's wonderful to be loved unconditionally. Hopefully, one gains security and a sense of self worth from such support. But one gains so much more when giving unconditional love.

Assuming the following:
-- one has a sense of self-worth
-- one is not in a relationship where that love will be abused repeatedly
-- one has healthy ego boundaries in place,

loving unconditionally is in the long term far more fulfilling than receiving such affection. One learns patience, tolerance, generosity, faith and so much more. When the loved one is gone, you get to keep all those gifts.

Neither if done on their own. To love unconditionally without return is to be self-deprecating, to be loved unconditionally without returning is to be selfish and although it will satisfy it will not fulfil. If this is the only thing that we can do, to be truly fulfilled then we must have both, but not necessarily with the same person. Hope this helps.

Both, if done properly.
