They are close to the same thing.
When they started makeing Notebooks they aimed for them to be lighter then Laptops. At the same time they were trying to screw with your head because they were working on these Tablet things, not what most people are use to seeing/useing that is just a pen and pad and hooks up to your computer, that some UPS people are equipped with these days. See the Tablet like things were/are Laptops where you could spin and drop the screen to cover the Keyboard and work like a drawing pad, the Landscape and Portrait style could be switched between as well.
So when they first released Laptops labled as "Notebooks" people had the image of those Tablet like computers in their heads. Unfortunately, Notebooks at this point are rarely like those... especially when companies like Macintosh are involved (everything is a Book with them, isn't it).
So they started aiming Notebooks at "Students". Haveing things plugged into children's movies and shows, especially in countries where they would waste that much money on a child (Japan for example).
At this point in time it's becomeing less likely a Laptop will be called a Laptop,.. even if they don't meet anything that Notebook has stood for up until this point. So now ordinary Laptops are called Notebooks and the exact same thing.
Yes, both can be equipped with a Wireless Card. There are more things available to Laptops and Notebooks then to normal computers, so you could have one with Wireless, some other things, normal network card, and normal modem (like phone to web). Which is exactly why some of these "Notebooks" end up clashing with their name.

Laptop and notebook mean the same thing. Laptop is the wrong word for it, but most people use it anyway. You see, if you put the laptop or notebook in your lap, you will surely have trouble with heat building up. This could lead to computer problems, or even give you a BURN.
I have tried to avoid using the word laptop, in favor of using notebook; but it seems like a futile effort.
So have fun connecting a wireless adapter to your laptop. If your laptop does not have wireless built-in, then buy a wireless adapter. I recommend that you go with the LinkSys brand.
Good luck and Happy Computing.

Size, basically. A notebook has a screen size of about 12", and is designed more for portability than to be a replacement for a desktop. It might have a wireless network interface card built in, but it should have a PCMCIA slot to take a plug-in one. If all else fails, you could use a USB one, but these do look a bit accident-prone, sticking so far out of the side!

A laptop and a notebook are the same thing. Modern laptops are more often called notebooks because it is not realistic to place them on your lap when working because of the excessive heat that is generated.
