Pick the right formula to suit your skin type, then apply it according to the type of coverage you want - a dry sponge gives fuller coverage, say if you have blemishes, a damp sponge gives a more natural finish. Concealers can go over or under - so make sure you know which type you have. Choose one that offers buildable coverage - if you need more coverage in a certain area you can add more without looking cakey. I swear by Mary Kay Cosmetics foundations - they have a massive range of formulas, colours, shades etc etc. Don't forget also that make up is only ever as good as the skin underneath, so get your skin in good order first! As to facial highighters - layering the product is best - trust me - I am a make-up artist! By the way you'll never look orange if the pick a colour that exactly matches your skin colour - never try to use foundation to give you a 'tan' - use blusher if you want a warm glow. Foundation should always match your skin.

I am fair skinned too, and I have two powder foundations because I don't need a lot of coverage. The one I use more is Prescriptives Anywear in vellum. It evens out my skin tone and looks natural. It makes me look like I have flawless skin. The other powder I use is Clinique Perfectly Real makeup. It also looks natural, but I prefer the Prescriptives one.
Good luck!

I know everybody says it but here goes...
BARE MINERALS.
I struggled for ten years, trying out every sort of foundation and powder in the freaking world, trying to cover up my rosacia without looking like I had an inch thick layer of makeup on my face. Bare Minerals is one application, all day long, and it blends perfectly. I have super white, Irish skin with tons of little red bumps, so coverage is pretty near impossible. The only thing that has ever worked without totally breaking me out or dripping off in a nour is Bare Minerals.

I am a makeup artist for an amazing company and I really recommend our products...NARS! You can find them at Sephora or any major department store such as Macy's, Lord & Taylor and Neimans. You will be sure to find the perfect foundation with just the right coverage for your skin tone and complexion.

I am absolutely in love with Bare Minerals!
I was always a "two layers of foundation" girl because I like to look "dressed up" with my makeup at all times.
When I saw the "info-mercials" for Bare Minerals I thought it was a load of crock - what is sold in infomercials and is actually worth it?
Then they started selling it my local beauty store and they talked me into trying it out! I am so glad they did. It's not super cheap, $25 for the foundation, but it lasts a long time (even when you wear a lot ;-)
Go into your local beauty store and ask them to put it on you, they'll do it for free and color-match for you!

Firstly, Clarins.
secondly have a full facial test so you need to go to a counter, its no use testing it on the back of your hand.
decide on a powder base or not.
also application is important, use a foundation brush rather than sponges or fingers.
