Plants take the carbon dioxide we exhale and make it into oxygen by taking the carbon for its own use. Plants give us food, without food we couldn't feed our animals which we also eat, and without food there would be no us. Plants also provide us with our homes, and barns. And unless its a synthetic material, it was probably a plant material at some time or is a plant material. Plants provide us with clothes also.

Because they are one huge chunk in the circle of life pie. They create oxygen for us and animals to breath. They are food for different species that couldn't survive without them(which explains some of the animal/insect extinctions). Humans eat them. They heal us. Your question is no different than asking why is oxygen necessary for survival...that's how important plants are. They keep the soil healthy. Etc....etc....etc....

because we have to eat them.
or if we eat animals, they have to eat plants to create their flesh.
or even if they eat animals those animals have to eat
plants to live.
eventually the food chain always gets down to plants.
you can't eat without plants at the bottom...
bread, pasta, french fries, etc contain plants.
what do you want cows and pigs to eat if not plants?
