Not every plant is the same, so this question should include the type of plant, its environment, and how long you've had it.
Indoor plants, outdoor plants, tropical plants, flower plants, fruit plants, vegetable plants, etc.
If it's a new plant (freshly planted by you from a seed), then you may still have the seed packet, which contains instructions. If someone gave you the plant, you may have to ask them about it. If it's an older (existing) plant, ask the person that gave it to you, or the person from bought it from.
Failing all these choices, go online with either the name of the plant or the type of plant, and search for care instructions.

This depends on several factors - different plants require different amounts of water, how quickly your soil drains, how hot it is. Also, what size plant are you talking about? A large plant will have a deeper root structure than a small one. Most of your common plants like you put in your yard landscaping do best when the soil is wet, but not muddy. If these are outdoor plants you should really think about using mulch. I prefer hardwood to pine chips or pine chunks because it will not blow away or float away during heavy storms and also is much easy to clean leaves out of when fall comes. Some people like that red dyed mulch (like Sonic and McDonald's use). Mulch will look nice, but it helps your plants by regulating moisture and temperature. You will need to water more if you have mulch because it absorbs quite a bit of water. Ideally, you want it about 3-4 inches thick.

Know your plants! Each and every plant needs different amounts of water. Are these indoor or outdoor plants? Where you live also makes a huge difference.
