Pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain with the disposal running every so often is also a good idea, as it will help to melt away any greasy deposits you might get. I have a public sewer connection and I have been pouring hamburger and bacon grease down it for years. Each time I follow it immediately with about a gallon of boiling water, and have never had a problem.

ahhh, the wonderful garbage disposal. one of the many useful appliances around the house. this is how i use mine. first, i turn on the water, then flick the switch to turn on the garbage disposal, and drop food in one spoonful at a time. wait till the grinding stops till you drop the next spoonful in. if the food gets stuck in the rubber stopper thing, i just grab a cup and fill it up, then dump it down with the food, it usually forces the food to go down there. if the food is really greasy or chunky, i run the hot water and drop a little dish soap in too. if your garbage disposal gets kind of a funky smell, drop some ice cubes down the sink while running the garbage disposal without running the water. if you want a fresh scent, try lemon peels or orange peels. its good to always run hot water down the drain while using it.

Run cold water for a good 30 seconds, after turning the disposal off, to thoroughly rinse ground-up food down the drain.

You can grind almost any food waste, but don't try to grind really fibrous food like onion skins, celery stalks or asparagus. On the other hand, ice and egg shells can actually help clean the disposal.
