first, you need to put all terms on one side...
x^2-10x+16
then you know you need to make it fit this format
(x+?)(x+?) OR (x-?)(x-?) OR (x-?)(x+?)
You know that +/- sign will be the same b/c 16 is positive.
So, now we know..
(x-?)(x-?) OR (x+?)(x+?)
Because 10x is negative, the signs will be minus signs.
So, now we know..
(x-?)(x-?)
Then we need to go through what number will produce 16..
1*16
2*8
4*4
We also know the numbers added together must equal 10 from the 10x. And we know to find the sum b/c 16 is a positive number.
1*16=17
2*8=10 ***
4*4=8
So our final answer is ..
(x-8) (x-2)
x=-8, x=-2
To check we would FOIL (First, outside, inside last)
x^2 -2x -8x +16
x^2 -10x +16
Try this one for practice...
x^2 - 7x + 12
a. x= -3, x=-4
Hope this helps. :)

x^2-10x=-16
x^2-10x+16=0
(x-8)(x-2)=0
x-8=0 or x-2=0
x=8 or x=2
x = 8 or 2
