Alright, I'm remodeling my house and i'm putting up some crown moulding in the bedrooms. Crown is sold for $0.69/linear foot. The rooms measure..10 x 10, 9 x 5, and 11 x 14. How do I measure so I know how much to get?

1 Sq. ft. = 2.1 Linear ft.
A room measuring 10' x 10' = 100 sq. ft.
100 Sq. ft. / 2.1 Ln. ft. = 47.619 Linear ft.
or 48 Linear Ft.
Add 10% for waste = 4.8 linear ft. ( round up to 5 ln. ft.)
48 Linear ft.
+ 5 Linear ft. (10% Added for waste)
________________________________
53 Linear ft. of crown req. for a 10' x 10' room
TIP:
To determine square footage - Measure length time width.
To determine linear footage - Divide square footage by 2.1, and round the result up to next whole number.
To calculate a waste allowance - Multiply the linear foot result by 5% (for waste)and add the product to the linear footage.
Anyone telling you that there are 40 linear ft. in a 100 square ft. room that measures 10 ft. by 10 ft. is flat wrong...period!

Linear feet is simply the number of feet something is. The walls is your one room all measure 10 feet long, so the linear feet is 40. Think of it as the perimeter.
Square feet would be measuring your wall length and multiplying by your wall height. if you have 8 foot tall ceilings your square feet of one wall would be 10X8= 80 square feet.
Just a tip... the ends of your crown might be dinged up from getting moved around at the store or during transportation, so do not buy a 10 foot piece of crown and expect it to be perfect for your room that is 10 feet wide. I would probably buy 12 foot lengths and you should only have one splice on your 14 foot walls. Good luck!

to get the linear square footage add the length and width a 10 x 10 room would have 40 linear feet (10 x 4) but it would be 100 square feet (length times width)

I just have to reply that "ratler243" is absolutely wrong in his calculation of linear feet. I know it's 9 years ago, but it's still wrong. You can do the calculation like this if you'd like for crown moulding, however, you will end up with considerable waste and expense. One method I've employed with crown is to have 3x the width of the crown per side of the room as waste. For example with 4" Crown Moulding: Have minimum of 12" per wall of extra. So a 10 x 10 room = 40' of crown if it has 4 walls so by my calculations you'd buy 44' of moulding minimum.

Measure the length of each wall and add it up then add about 10 percent more for cutting and mistakes.....but then again I could just tell you from the measurements you have given.....the 10x10 room is 40 Linar feet , the 9x5 room is 28 Linar feet and the 11x14 is 50 Linar feet...these are exact measurement and add a bit more...depending on the length of the crown you will need to devide the total of 118 linar feet ....12 -10 foot pieces, 10 12 foot pieces....Good Luck

I have seen some brands of crown molding in lengths up to 16 ft. If you bought 2) 16 ft. 6) 12 ft. and 4) 10 ft. you would not need to splice anything in the field, and you would have enough for a few mistakes, without too much waste.
