There is no magical solution for this, is there? My daughter is 10 months and, of course, doesn't have bumpers on the bed, but she seems to wake up crying after we hear a big BUMP when she hits her head on the crib rails when she repositions herself or turns over. It has been waking her up in the night a lot lately...she is so active now. There is nothing we can buy to pad her head, is there? I'm sure this is a common question! Thanks!

An FYI: The idea of taking out bumpers at 10 months is NOT solely because of suffocation issues, as much as the child climbing up on them and falling out of the crib. An active 10 month old ready to walk WILL do this!

Okay here's the thing...I had the same problem with my son, he's now 6, going on 7....what I had to do, was buy 2 set's of baby bumpers for his crib and put one above the other, (if you can help it DO NOT leave a space between the two bumpers) and the way you can do this is either tie them together, or if your kid rolls around like mine...i had to sew two set's together to get enough height that he wouldn't bump his head alot at night, if she's that active you may need 3 set's but trust me this works like a charm, because the bumper sets do cover the entire crib area. You can either buy them in a store like Walmart...etc...or like I did go to a gently used children's store and get them for less, who care's if they match, as long as the baby's head is protected right??

Good luck to you hon!

At 8 months old suffocation from bumper pads really isn't an issue as she can move her head and turn over on her own. When a baby/child stops breathing or has his/her breathing obstructed, he/she will move... assuming that the baby is moving freely (as your child is).

Bumper are also soft and will not hold up to a baby standing on them. It would be like a baby standing on a pillow... it will crush down to only a couple of inches in height.

Put the bumpers up and this should stop your child from bumping her head.

I don't know if this will work because my son is only 4 months and u have an older baby. But he is active already. Every morning when we wake up he is sideways in his crib. So, we knew that was going to happened. We rolled up two big towels and put it on the sides of his crib. Now, when he rolls or something his head is next to the towel. Just old-school remedy. You need to be spending your money on all them pads and stuff. Just emprovise (if that's how u spell it) and find soft towels in your house.

All those people who suggested bumpers are stupid. This child is way too old for bumpers, as you seem to already know. Kids can smother in them once they start to move around, get caught in them, and use them as a step to climb out of the crib. I'm unaware of a solution other than to maybe have her sleep in a pack-&-play with mesh sides.

You may want to try Jolly Jumper Air Flow Bumper Pads. Or something similiar if its no available in your area. They are quite thin and breathable. They not only allow airflow (so your child isnt breathing in recycled air) but they are padded enough to provide something between the crib bars and your daughters head, but not thick enough to use as a stepping stone to climb out of her crib.
I have them on both of our cribs and they work well. My daughter is pulling up to standing at 7 months in her crib and the Airflow bumper pad is not strong or thick enough for her to use to climb. They also prevent little arms and legs from getting stuck between the bars.
Something worth checking into :)

Your daughter is ten months old...not much is going to restrain or stop her..the only thing i can think of is repositioning her in her crib..lay her the other way like diagonal instead of verticle in her crib and see if that helps...another thing that may work is getting one of those pads that prevents babies from rolling over in their sleep they are cheap and may do the trick since they prevent much movement. Try that.

My daughter is 8-months and we have the same problem. As much as she is moving.....you should NOT put the bumpers back in. I would rather my daughter bump her head, then cuddle up to the bumpers and smother herself. My only advice is to do what we do. Get up, move her back to the middle and she'll go back to sleep. Eventually, she'll stop doing it or she'll get used to it and won't wake up.

my daughter is also 10 months old, she sleeps in a crib with bumpers on the side, no problems like yours.
