He was singing this song to remember John Lennon, he sings in the song "Jonny, why can't you come out and play in your empty garden?" But you could interpret this song to remember any lost friend. A garden is what someone accomplishes in their yard, and since the friend is gone their yard's garden becomes empty or devoid of life.
