in super smash bros melee how do i do teams (red vs blue) with my buddy?

for the game cube how do i team in vs mode with my buddy

At character select screen, go to the upper left hand corner and there should be some text saying free for all or something. press a there and then teams could pop up.

yep, just go to the top left corner of the screen where it says "free for all" and press A. that should bring you to team play, and just click on the color tab to change colors.
