It has been implied that it could be several states, however, if all of the simpson's landscape surrounding them was taken into the equation, it would be impossible saying there is a desert, snowy mountain, tropics, and a regular suburbia.

A candidate for the home of the simpsons is most likely oregon, because they have the ocean, snowy mountains, forests, suburbia, and all of the above, yet not as so much as a desert. Also, it has been implied that "shelbyville" could really be Portland oregon, which is Springfields neighbor in real life

Matt Groening has also said that it is imaginary in one of his interviews, saying it was to keep watchers wondering

No, the name Springfield is a shared name of over 30 states. Many states have been suggested but also ruled out due to conflicting evidence. The city has it all, coastlines, desserts, mountains and anything else a joke requires. If you look closely in the episode "Canine Mutiny" when Bart is reading the mail all it says on the address is "Resident 742 Evergreen Terrace Springfield U.S.A." If you dont believe me then just follow the link after 18 seasons I think I know what I am talking about.

Well not that i know of... i don't think Matt growening ever has said it. Springfield is actually a made up city in Shelbiville and near Capitol City. But there is an episode where the town divides into two area codes and they are 636 939 ..The area code of 636 is missouri so the simpsons live in springfield missouri..but on the other hand 939 is the area code for puerto rico so then again i don't know.

The producers decided that it they dont live in a particular state. The DMV in Springfield has a sign that says 'springfield DMV" not the name of a state. When Mr. Burns ran for governor they showed a picture of the state flag in his TV commercial. The slogan was "not just another state". This slogan does not appear on any state flag.

I watched a very early episode the other day, and I swear that I saw "Springfield, NJ" on an package. But, I could be wrong. They have never said specifically, though. Maybe they will say it in the movie.

They say the show is loosely based on Eugene/Springfield, Oregon. However I don't know if they have ever said which state it's supposed to be on the show. I think it's the creator that's from Eugene.

It is a long standing joke. The exact location of Springfield is unknown. And pretty impossible. Snowy mountains, ocean, desert, forest, and swamp all surround it.
