Yes they do, everyday more and more people in Texas learn the language...Since a lot of people from Mexico go shopping to Texas, it is good business to know the language. Plus there is a large comunity of hispanics in Texas. I quote a web page "Nine of Texas' 19 media markets have Spanish-language TV stations; 126 of the state's 837 radio stations broadcast in Spanish. In a state where many Hispanics can remember being paddled at school if they were caught speaking their parents' language, bilingualism is now a virtue. ''It's introducing another variable into the elections: your ability to speak Spanish, and how well you speak it,'' says Tatcho Mindiola, director of the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston."

Not everyone, but, yes, they do; especially the ones who live around the borders like El Paso, Brownsville, and anywhere in the valley of Texas. Most of the cities along the border are about 80% Hispanic-American. They are a nice group of people. I picked up some Spanish when I lived in Texas. It has helped me a great deal.

I think by the way things look, we're all going to have to learn Spanish everywhere.
I think however, the closer to the boarder you get in Texas the more you'll hear people speaking and understanding Spanish.

I have friends from Mexico who have told me that the counties and cities closest to the Mexican border do understand quite a bit of Spanish. Probably from the immagration from Mexico to the US. Although, where I live (Atlanta, GA) alot of Mexicans have moved to my part of town and alot of the jobs around here are trying to find bilingual employees in order to keep up with the demands.

Depends on what part of TX. I was in Ft. Hood and for that area the answer would be a big no.
The further south you go the more you will find bilingual & Spanish speaking people.

Texas is a VERY big state so it depends on where you're located. Border towns are more likely to have a large Spanish-speaking community.

For the most part we do. I don't speak it fluently, I refuse to cater to the damned people who insist on speaking spanish in America, fine the illegals jumped the border and have stayed but dammit adapt to OUR ways not the other way around, it's so damned irritating.
Before I get flamed, I'm of latin descent but my ancestors adapted so the modern people should have to.

True, people here have trouble with plain English as well.
But, why should we learn Spanish? This isn't Spain or Mexico. People who move here should respect this country. If they don't like our language, they should leave us alone. I'd like the lines of communication to be open, but this country's language is English, so people here should speak that.
