1000 metres = 1 km

kilo = 1000 (e.g. kilogram = 1000 grams)
centi = 1/100 th (e.g. centimeter = 1/100 th of a meter)
milli = 1/1000 th (e.g. millisecond = 1/1000 th of a second)

Rather than learning that 1000 meters (or metres if you're British) is a kilometer, you are better just learning the prefixes that can be put before meter, gram, second and many other units of measurement. Some combinations are more widely used than others but there is no reason that you couldn't talk about a kilosecond, meaning 1000 seconds, except that people would find the term unfamiliar and uncomfortable. It is, of course, more common to use minutes, hours, days and so on for a large number of seconds.
