It happens a lot. Why is this?

To clarify, I mean say they are raped when they are not, not the other way around. I realize why they would not like to go to court.

I would challenge the statement that it happens a lot...but it certainly does happen.

The reasons can range from not wanting to admit that the sex was consensual, to being drunk/high and not being sure (or embarrassed) the day after, to wanting to get revenge on the guy for some real or imagined wrong, to wanting to extort money from the embarrassed man, etc.

Again, I would say most rapes are just that. Don't let the publicity surrounding the Duke lacosse case make you believe otherwise. But, everyone should be believed innocent until proven guilty. That did not happen with the guys from Duke.

I think the statement "It happens a lot" is a rather ignorant, misinformed comment to make about false rape reports. Just because woman doesn't kick or scream during an alleged rape doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Most people are rapped by someone they already know while alcohol is involved. By law, in the state of California, sex can not be deemed consensual if the woman is intoxicated.

Like many people stated above, reporting rape and going through the whole rape kit, & police report process is incredibly humiliating, teriffying, and intrusive.

Some girls lie because they are afraid their parents will really go off if they know they gave in and did sex. Some times things get too hot the gal started it and changes mind........ yells rape....its best if the gal changes their mind then BACK OFF>........
Too much drink can get in the way and thats not the way one or both parties wanted it to go. Have your witts about yourself!!!

Even though I have met women like what you are talking about, I think that are far fewer women who lie about being raped than there are women who have been raped and never said anything to anyone about it.

The most common reasons the women gave for falsely accusing rape were "spite or revenge," and to compensate for feelings of guilt or shame. In some cases there is compensation available for women found to have been raped.

According to a nine-year study conducted by former Purdue sociologist Eugene J. Kanin, in over 40 percent of the cases reviewed, the complainants eventually admitted that no rape had occurred (Archives of Sexual Behavior, Vol. 23, No. 1, 1994). Kanin also studied rape allegations in two large Midwestern universities and found that 50 percent of the allegations were recanted by the accuser.

In 1985 the Air Force conducted a study of 556 rape accusations. Over one quarter of the accusers admitted, either just before they took a lie detector test of after they had failed it, that no rape occurred. A further investigation by independent reviewers found that 60 percent of the original rape allegations were false.
The most common reasons the women gave for falsely accusing rape were "spite or revenge," and to compensate for feelings of guilt or shame (Forensic Science Digest, vol. 11. no. 4, December 1985).

Dr. Charles P. McDowell, Supervisory Special Agent, U.S. Air Force, Office of Special Investigations found that:

"To my considerable chagrin, we found that at least 60 percent of all the rape allegations were false."

Would you want to admit this happened to you?
Then if you tell the truth and go to court the woman is put on trial anyway!
Why tell the truth when sometimes lying saves you a lot of humilation and violation... Most of the time going to court is like being raped again! Seriously unless you have been there don't question why some women do what they do.

Are you sure it happens a lot? There are much more really raped women who decided to keep silent because the legal procedure is very hard and humiliating and is still tending to accuse woman as she provoked it.

I think a lot of people lie about a lot of crimes. Some people just like being a victim.

Rape and other forms of abuse are the most heinous to lie about, since it's such a closeted and humiliating experience to begin with. The more people do **** like that, the more actual crimes go unreported.

Some people lie because they do not want to accept responsibility for their own actions, and they feel like people would accept them if they labeled their fornication, rape instead.

People have different motives and/or intentions for lying.

Some crave attention, sometimes its an act of spite or revenge. Whatever the case - to lie about being the victim of any crime is a sign of someone crying for more than attention - they need help.
