My husband broke his hand 2 weeks ago and all his job told him was to keep them updated and that they could not have him come back until the doctor gave him a full release. In the meantime, we have bills to pay and we are about to lose our house because they won't let him work light-duty or anything like that. Are there any governmental programs that can help us out? The unemployment office turned us down and I don't know where else to go.

We do not own the house, we rent and we will not be able to make the next payment. The unemployment office told him that they wouldn't help him because since he had no doctor's release that he would not be able to work anywhere so they wouldn't pay him. I hope this helps people understand my situation a little more.

Sorry about you and your husband's misfortune.

Did he hurt his hand at work? If so, contact the Workers' Compensation board in your area. If not, I would try Social Security Office. Try to start a claim for someone that is temporarily disabled (since the Dr. won't let him go back to work maybe he will agree to put that on the medical forms). Nevertheless, that may take a while as well for them to review the case.

I would contact both of these offices and if they can't help you I would ask them if they could point you in the right direction to an office that could.

I would also try Catholic Charities in your area, see if they can help or know of an organization that can.

Depending on how your house is set up, you may want to rent the basement out (carefully though) for an extra income. This could just be for a temporary basis and let the person know that up front.

** Contact the Department of Social Services - (this is different than Social Security) - alot of them have it where it is set up to help with rent payments.

** Try FEMA they assist with rent payments also***

**Contact Salvation Army Administrative offices in your area some of them have it where they assist with rent and/or have connections to organizations that do.***

Hope this helps.

Best of luck to you.

Is this a work related injury? If so you should be receiving work comp. If this is a private injury then you should find out if your state has State disability which is usually handled through the Unemployment office just different forms. If they do not have that available then your only option is state aid (welfare) which generally counts your last three months of income. I know it doesn't help you now but you can sign up for private disability insurance like AFLAC.
Unemployment will only help if he is able and available for work and without the release he is ineligible.
As other folks have suggested there are agencies out there that will help you with your rent, however you usually must have a three or thirty day notice in hand to get help.

I agree, call your mortgage company and tell them what has happened. They will possibly cut your payments in half for awhile. You will need proof to give them though, like a doctors report.
If he didn't break his hand at work, the state probably won't help as far as workers compensation. You might go to your states welfare office and they may be able to give you some food stamps for awhile. Possibly give you some cash. Call your electric company and ask who to call about helping you pay your utilities. Lots of organizations, like churches have funds available to help pay the electric and telephone bills(not cell phones) Get rid of the cable and any unnecessary bills.
Do you work? If you don't, maybe you should look for some. Then you won't be so dependent on his income. You will have one coming in too.

First, call your mortgage broker and tell them the situation. They may be willing to work out a deal. They would much rather you pay for the house than to foreclose on it.

You can try non-profit orgs like The Catholic Charities. There is likely a local or nearby office of the United Way that can point you in the right direction.

If he got hurt at wok then they owe him workers compensation. If he got hurt outside of work then he needs to find another job or file for temporary disability with the social security administration. His hand will probably heal before you ever get your money though, claims take months to go through. He should look for alternative work until he is cleared for his old job. Also, the unemployment office should not reject his claim, if he is unemployed then that's why they are there. Retry this as well.

Wait a minute. You can't lose a house in 2 weeks. Impossible. If you are seriously about to lose your house, then you weren't making payments long before he broke his hand.

Contact your county's department of housing.
