If the old machine has a CD burner then burn CD's of all of your data. If it doesn't have a CD burner, then you can stick one in it temporarily.

Past that, the cheapest way would probably be to get a little keychain flash drive and dump stuff onto it (if the old machine has USB ports.

If you are feeling frisky, you can always yank the old hard drive out and set the jumper to slave, and put it into the new machine (carefully) and then you can just dump drive to drive.

connect the hard drive from the Win98 machines as a slave to the new computer running XP, transfer the files using Windows Explorer.
