i have three favorites for a mix of reasons.
1) rushmore by wes anderson. most people will say that royal tennenbaums was their favorite, but this one seemed to have more of a story and the chracters were grounded into a more realistic world. the rock music and the attitude mixed in with the akward love triangle make this movie about teenage angst a must see.
2) seven samurai by akira kurosawa. he's such a great film maker. in this film, seven struggling swordsmen are hired by a poor villiage to protect the town from bandits. it's shot in black and white, but some of the shots are so wonderful that you swear you see color. the actors are top notch and the story hits on themes of war and why men fight and the tragedy of loss. it was so good that the american studios made the film "the magnificent seven" which was also pretty good, but not a favorite.
3) cinema paradiso by guiseppe tornatore. this is a film for film fans. it's about a boy during world war two era italy and his love of movies throughout the decades. it's rich in story and emotions and has beautiful shots. i've heard that it's miramax's first movie that they released but i'm not sure about that. if you're a true fan of film, then you will identify with this movie. i would recommend however to watch the original theatrical release instead of the director's cut which sheds light on some unanswered questions of the original, but in the end just adds an hour of talking.

Is film art? Yes... If you look at film in a really broad sense of the medium, film is a series of carefully constructed images to generate meaning and emotion. I am of the opinion that Hollywood cinema goes about trying to wow its audiences with big special effects and comparitively dumbed down storylines. I say comparititively because art-house cinema in particularly can generate a much greater fulfillment of emotional connection and demands a much more educated eye to watch it. This all comes down to the way Hollywood has operated since the 1st world war, where profit is everything. It is like a machine, churning out films for the masses. Art-house cinema in comparison cannot compete with Hollywood in terms of scale and budget, so it has to be more creative. A films purpose can be classed in many different ways, from escapism, to political propoganda, entertainment or education. Is mainstream cinema dumbing down the masses... Perhaps, but only through some subject matters. I think TV should be blamed for dumbing down the masses, film demands a viewers attention for a prolonged period of time and so, in my opinion has a beneficial, impacting affect on its audience. hope this helps

Miller's Crossing - Great cast, cat time setting, phenomenal story line, and A-1 acting. One of the best all around made films.
