It hurts a very little, go slowly, but then feels wonderful. I was nervous, but as long as you have no other doubts, it's nothing to be worried about.
Didn't use lube (suppose we would've if using a condom though-I was on the pill, longterm bf) and made very little mess, but I understand that's variable. I've never used a tampon, or experimented for that matter, so I don't believe either are necessary or make it much easier, it wasn't as bad as I'd imagined and is a pleasant memory.
Make sure it's what you want and enjoy.

Only if you do it wrong. 100 years ago when women were not allowed to even think about sex it might have. Now, if you have ever used a tampax then you swhould be fine. Take it nice and easy though.
