A slice of lemon rubbed all over it then buffed to a shine with a dry tissue.
Alternatively replace the lemon with a splash of mouthwash.

I clean all my stainless steel with a baby wipe (in fact I use baby wipes for most things initially, especially wood). Once cleaned, I buff up with a clean cloth, then if you want a real sparkle, give it the once over with a little white vinegar on a paper towel.

There are two ways of doing this. First you could use a cleaner specially for stainless steel, or try baby on a cloth, then buff with a dry cloth.

The only material that "smears" is grease. So you got to get in there with a grease lifter. Solvent if it is on the outside(non eating area) or liquid soaps if it is on a food contact area. Soaps with lemon seem to work better. Hot, hot water melts the grease too so get the heat in there.
And once you got the smeary crap off then you can clean the steel as necessary.

I worked for a hotel for many years and we always cleaned the chrome and stainless fixtures with Windex and a dry cotton rag. Don't use the ones that are multi-purpose cleaners as they leave a funky residue.

There is a product named Barkeepers friend. It is similar to Comet, but less gritty. It works wonders on stainless steel pots and pans, rinse with water and towel dry.
