I added rice to all three of my children's bottles per the doctor's orders because they had reflux. My sister used Enfamil AR (formula with rice already in it) with her two kids because they never seemed to get full just off formula alone. I work in the medical field and rice is suggested more than you think to help with several feeding situations. Even though the rice in the Enfamil AR is startch rice it still does the same thing as adding regular rice to whatever formula you are using the texture is just a little different and the formula with it already in there is a little less of a hastle. They also make nipples specially for thicker formulas (formula with rice added to them) so I doubt these items would be on the shelf and out there for parents to purchase if they were so bad for babies. All babies are different and what is right for one may not be right for another so people really shouldn't tell you not to do it because of what they believe to be true. You're the only one that knows your baby so use your instincts.

Cereal should never go into a bottle unless under a doctor's advice for a baby with reflux.
Solids (including cereal) should be started on a spoon around 6 months of age. Babies don't have the enzymes present in their tummies to digest anything other than breastmilk or formula prior to this age. Start solids early also puts baby at an increased risk for allegies, diabetes and obesity.
Solid foods in the first year are mostly for fun and practice. Breastmilk or formula should continue to make up most of baby's nutrition for the entire first year.

I started to put a bit of Farax into my kids night time bottles at about 6 weeks of age. You only use a bit - just enough to thicken up the formula. As bubs go through a growth spurt around the 6 week period the farax fill them up a bit more and allowed me to get a few more hours sleep, but remember every child is different and this may not work for you.If you want to try it give bub some and wait a day or so to see if there are any reactions. Also even just a teaspoon may throw bubs bowl system out of wack for a bit as you are introducing something that their bowls. Once again wait a day or two before giving any more just to allow bubs body to digest. Then when you feel all is ok slowly increase the bottles.

It is not recommended to give your child rice cereal before 4 months of age. There are new studies to show that even 4 months is still too early and your baby's digestive system may still be too immature. I suggest discussing this with your child's doctor.
It is also not okay to put cereal into a bottle. The purpose of infant cereals is to provide extra calories and calcium for baby's growing bones and to teach them to eat with a spoon. By putting cereal into a bottle you are defeating the purpose. Cereal meals and formula meals should always be a seperate affair :)
You may get answers from other mothers saying they gave cereal at a young age, nothing happened to their baby etc etc But the great thing about scientific research is that its always progressing and we know more now about babies then we did 10 - 30 years ago.
Good luck!

I started at around 3-4 months just before bed. Mix cereal with formula(just a few teaspoons to start) in a bowl. Make it a very watery consistency and feed off of a spoon. Do Not mix and give in a bottle! You want your child to know that cereal comes from a spoon and formula comes from a bottle. Your asking for trouble later if you don't. this was actually pediatrician recommended to me.

i would say anytime after 4 months........
i guess it just depends where your from and what you believe
..........at the drs office yesterday a lady was giving her two month old apple juice
i would probably kill someone if i caught then giving my two month old apple juice...........but thats just me
i would give my kids cereal at or around 4 months...usually about 2 tbspn with 4 ounces milk ( for the first feeding) you have to make it really thin cause they are barely learning how to swallow thicker foods
with my first daughter who is now 4
the dr laid her flat on her back and pulled her up to a sitting position ( by the arms) do this slowly and gently........she said if the head stays back and the baby does not have a instinct to move the muscles in in the neck to bring the head forward then the baby is not ready for solids.......
if the baby brings head along with the rest of the body then that means the baby has control of all the muscles in the neck which means the baby is now ready for solids........
that is the guide that i go by which to me makes a LOT of sense (to me at least)
also on the box of infant cereal there is a list of readiness ques that you can read and decide for your self if you think your child is ready
well good luck

I used rice cereal when my baby was a few months old (really thin)... but I since heard that anything besides milk or formula before four months increases SIDS... That is something I just heard... alot of parents give rice cereal cause it digests harder and causes the baby to sleep longer

My husband and I had to put cereal in our son's bottle when he was 2 months. Our son wouldn't keep the formula down because it was too thin. I don't remember how much we put in, but even after the first bottle he was happier and not as hungry because he could hold it down. We tried giving him just formula a couple times afterwards and he went right back to vomiting, even with the low iron formula.

Sure I did, at around 4 months of age. A lil' at a time though...like a tsp at a time....to make sure she likes it.
Summer, professionals will tell you not to do everything, just because it's been written down. There's been no proof it harms an infant to add cereal. It actually makes them sleep through the night Since they are not very hungry.
