Does anyone know what scholar's philosophy the movie Matrix was built on?

Your information about who wrote the movie "The Matrix" is incorrect.

It was written only by Larry and Andy Wachowski. They are not philosophy students... other than film-makers and comic-book writers, the only other profession they can claim is carpentry.

Many have pointed out the movie's similarity to a number of other existing works, however, including Gibson's "Neuromancer" and Morrison's "The Invisibles". For the record, neither of those are philosophers or students.

Still, the many, many philosophical ideas in the movie are not particularly new either. Which is why it's difficult to pin any particular person down and credit them with it. The nature of reality has been talked about by just about everyone at one time or another!

It was built on the works of many scholars. They took different bits from each one. Plato (and his cave), Baudrillard, Hobbes, Zerzan and William James to name but a few. I'm sure that there are loads more and I really wish that I could give you all the details but I don't study philosophers. I just swung by here by accident.

I'm pretty sure it was actually a British Astronomer by the name of Fred Hoyle. He was the first to really make a large statement about the order of the universe being a little too perfect.
