I would think exhalation. Since breathing is an automatic response, I believe all the air is released when a person passes. It wouldn't make sense for a person to take a breath and hold it if they're dead.

That's a good question! My guess would be that it would be an exhale because the body functions have died and the air has no place to go except out.

when a person dies they empty their body out. even the lungs. so the answer is exhalation. i have worked at a hospital for 6 years and seen it many times.
